Damn Chinese! / Dasar Cina!

Indonesian people commonly used that term to describe any Chinese race. Of course that term goes with negative connotative. A little ambiguous actually, because this is hatred term and love term at the same time. It can be hate because with that term we look at Chinese as a bad guy. Dishonest, clumsy, rude, hate anybody else than them, and frankly speaking. But love at the same time. This came because of Chinese people look as a lucky, smart, persistence, hard worker, good trader, -and of course- rich. That is a Chinese stereotype from ‘native race’ view.

There are many mistakes in that kind of stereotype. As same as another race or ethnic group in Indonesia which is more than 700, no body has identical. None of them even they are Javanese, Bataknese, Sundanese, Malayan, Bugisian, Papuanese, Timorense, or Dayaknese. No generalization could be applied to all people within one population. Even there are general schemes or modus, which is neutral. Just like Javanese like to eat sweet food or Minangakabau people like to eat hot chili food.

It is similar within their life, business or private, all depends on every individual people. But there are general scheme which show Chinese people which trade or doing business, proven more persist than any other race in the world. Israeli can see themselves as God lover, Aryan can claimed themselves as the most clever, Brazilian good in football, British the most gentle and aristocrat, but for trade, Chinese is the most persistence people. It scared American and European Union with various China commodities enter they market.

What make them differentiate Chinese with another race is because they have old culture and sailed since a long time ago. Many of them went to far land including to Nusantara (old name of Indonesian area plus several other island which now belong to other countries). They had made family at that foreign land, far from their ancestor land. So, are they still Chinese? Even they already became foreign land citizen from generation to generation?

For Indonesian, it is not enough if we made such public service advertising. The most important one is we must change our entire paradigm. Chinese race is not ‘alien’ which ‘eating people’. They are as same as us, human being which eating rice. What make them different from the other which unsuccessful is the general scheme of Chinese work method to gain success.

Every one can be successful, but must reveal the secret. It never enough with positive thinking only like The Secret book taught us, but positive action also. Chinese people prove they can success with positive action when facing their trade partner. Even they put their own interest after the other. Just see around you there are many Chinese races whose has no good house, even they have money for it. They put their money as capital to spread their trade.  Eventhough not all of Chinese people’s personality and habit are positive, but anything positive can be learn by us. No need to utter that rude term –like in the beginning of this article- then. Contrary, maybe we should better ask, “Wow, are you Chinese? May I follow you to success?”

(I’d love to write about this general scheme in business of this Chinese race in the next chance. May God bless my intention.).

Semoga Tuhan memberi kesempatan.)
